Restricting who can see a page, category or brand

Limit a page, category or brand to signed-in customers, or to customers with certain tags, and see what a visitor without access gets. Enterprise plan.

You can limit who sees a page, a category or a brand page on your storefront: everyone, only customers who are signed in, or only signed-in customers who carry certain tags. Use it for trade price lists, members-only content or a brand you sell to approved buyers. The setting is called Who can view and sits on the edit screen of each one.

Considerations

  • Who can view is part of the Enterprise plan. On other plans the options do not appear. If you are on Enterprise and cannot see them, contact support to have the feature switched on for your store.
  • Create the page, category or brand first. The options are on its edit screen, not on the create form.
  • Everyone is the default.
  • Restricting a page does not publish it. A page still needs Make page visible to customers ticked, or the customers you allow will not find it either.
  • With Customers with tags, a customer needs any one of the tags you pick, not all of them. See Adding tags to a customer.
  • The Pages list does not show which pages are restricted. Open the page to check.

Restrict a page

  1. From your Orbit dashboard, go to Storefront, then Pages.
  2. Hover over the page's row and click Settings. The Edit Page screen opens.
  3. In the left-hand list, click Visibility.
  4. Scroll past Make page visible to customers, Visible from (optional) and Hide from search results to Who can view this page.
  5. Choose one:
    • Everyone: anyone can view this page.
    • Logged-in customers: visitors must sign in to view this page.
    • Customers with tags: only signed-in customers with at least one of the chosen tags can view this page.
  6. If you chose Customers with tags, click the Required customer tags box and pick a tag from the list, for example Wholesale. Pick more if you need to. The list only holds tags that already exist. You cannot make a new one here.
  7. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar at the bottom. The message Page saved appears and the rule is live straight away.

Restrict a category

  1. From your Orbit dashboard, go to Products, then Categories.
  2. Click the category. The Edit Category page opens.
  3. In the left-hand list, click Who can view.
  4. Choose Everyone, Logged-in customers or Customers with tags. For tags, pick them under Required customer tags.
  5. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar. The message Category updated appears.

A restricted category also drops out of storefront search and category lists for visitors who cannot see it. For the rest of the category editor, see Organising products with categories.

Restrict a brand

  1. From your Orbit dashboard, go to Products, then Brands.
  2. Click the brand name. The Edit Brand page opens.
  3. In the left-hand list, click Who can view.
  4. Choose Everyone, Logged-in customers or Customers with tags. For tags, pick them under Required customer tags.
  5. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar. The message Brand updated successfully appears.

A restricted brand drops out of storefront search for visitors who cannot see it. For the rest of the brand editor, see Adding and managing brands.

What a visitor without access sees

  • A visitor who is not signed in is sent to your store's sign-in page. After signing in, they land on the page they asked for.
  • A signed-in customer without a matching tag sees the message This page is private, with a note to contact the store for access.
  • Restricted pages, categories and brands are left out of storefront search results for anyone who cannot view them.

Customers need a storefront account before they can sign in. See Inviting customers to create an account.

Tip: Add the access tag to a customer when you approve them, not when they ask. The tag alone opens the page.

Open a page up again

  1. Open the page, category or brand as above.
  2. Under Who can view, choose Everyone.
  3. Click Save.
