The Subscription Settings page in Orbit Commerce allows you to configure how subscriptions behave for your store, including cancellation rules, failed payment recovery, customer self-service, plan changes, and the emails sent to your customers.

From here you can decide when cancellations take effect, how failed payments are retried, what customers can manage themselves, when plan changes apply, and which notifications are sent automatically.

Accessing Subscription Settings

To access Subscription Settings:

  • From the left-hand menu, go to Settings.

  • Select Subscription Settings.

The Subscription Settings page will open, with each group of options shown in its own panel.

Cancellation Policy

The Cancellation Policy panel controls how and when subscriptions can be cancelled.

  • Default cancellation timing — choose what happens when a subscription is cancelled. Select End of billing period to let the customer keep access until the current period ends, or Immediate to revoke access right away.

  • Allow customers to cancel — when enabled, customers can cancel their own subscriptions from their portal.

Failed Payment Recovery

The Failed Payment Recovery panel configures how the system handles failed subscription payments.

  • Grace period — how long to retry payments before taking action. Choose 1 week, 2 weeks, or 3 weeks.

  • Auto-cancel after grace period — when enabled, subscriptions that remain unpaid after the grace period are cancelled automatically.

  • Maximum retry attempts — the number of times a failed payment is retried, between 1 and 10.

Customer Self-Service

The Customer Self-Service panel controls what customers can manage from their portal.

  • Allow customers to pause — when enabled, customers can pause and resume their subscriptions.

  • Allow customers to change plan — when enabled, customers can upgrade or downgrade their subscription plan.

Plan Changes

The Plan Changes panel configures when upgrades and downgrades take effect.

  • Upgrade timing — choose whether an upgrade applies Immediately or at the Next billing period.

  • Downgrade timing — choose whether a downgrade applies Immediately or at the Next billing period.

  • Enable proration — when enabled, prorated amounts are calculated when plan changes happen mid-cycle.

Email Notifications

The Email Notifications panel controls which subscription emails are sent to your customers. Each notification can be switched on or off, and two of them let you set how many days in advance the email is sent.

  • Payment reminder — reminds customers before an upcoming charge. When enabled, set how many days beforehand the reminder is sent (1 to 14).

  • Payment failed — notifies customers when a payment attempt fails.

  • Subscription cancelled — sends a confirmation when a subscription is cancelled.

  • Trial ending soon — warns customers before their trial period ends. When enabled, set how many days beforehand the warning is sent (1 to 14).

  • Subscription renewed — sends a receipt when a subscription renews successfully.

Saving your changes

As soon as you change any setting, Save changes and Discard buttons appear. Click Save changes to apply your settings, or Discard to undo your edits and return to the last saved values.

Why subscription settings are important

Your subscription settings shape the experience customers have throughout the life of their subscription, from how plan changes are handled to the messages they receive. Setting them up carefully helps you recover failed payments, reduce unwanted cancellations, and keep customers informed.

By using the Subscription Settings page, you can:

  • Decide when cancellations and plan changes take effect

  • Retry failed payments and recover revenue automatically

  • Let customers manage their own subscriptions where appropriate

  • Keep customers informed with timely, automated emails
