The Tax Settings section in Orbit Commerce allows you to configure tax rates and rules for different regions and products. You can enable tax calculation for your store and use regional presets to set up tax zones and rates automatically.

From here you can turn tax calculation on or off, control how taxes are calculated and displayed, and quickly create the tax zones and rates for the regions you sell to.

Accessing Tax Settings

To access Tax Settings:

  • From the left-hand menu, go to Settings.

  • Select Store.

  • Open the Tax Settings tab.

The Tax Settings page will open, showing the Global Tax Configuration and Quick Setup options.

Enabling tax calculation

Under Global Tax Configuration you can control how taxes are calculated and displayed across your store.

To switch tax calculation on, turn on the Enable Taxes toggle. Once enabled, Orbit Commerce will calculate tax on orders in your store using the tax zones and rates you have set up. If you leave this turned off, no tax will be applied to orders.

Quick Setup regional presets

The Quick Setup section lets you automatically set up tax rates for your selling regions, so you do not have to create each zone and rate by hand. Choose a regional preset and Orbit Commerce will create the matching tax zones and rates for you.

The following presets are available:

  • United States — state-level sales tax rates for all 50 states plus DC, creating 51 zones and 51 rates.

  • European Union — standard VAT rates for all 27 EU member states, creating 27 zones and 27 rates.

  • United Kingdom — standard (20%), reduced (5%), and zero (0%) VAT rates, creating 1 zone and 3 rates.

To apply a preset, select the region you want to set up. Orbit Commerce will then create the tax zones and the rates shown alongside that preset.

How tax zones and rates work

A tax zone represents a region where tax is charged, such as a country or a state, and each zone holds one or more tax rates that apply to orders in that region.

  • For the United States, each state and DC becomes its own zone with its own state-level sales tax rate.

  • For the European Union, each member state becomes its own zone with its standard VAT rate.

  • For the United Kingdom, a single zone is created holding the standard, reduced, and zero VAT rates.

Once the zones and rates exist, they are used to calculate the tax shown on orders for customers in those regions.

Existing zones are skipped

If you run a Quick Setup preset and a tax zone with the same name already exists, that zone will be skipped rather than duplicated or overwritten. This means you can safely apply a preset without affecting zones you have already set up, and you can run more than one preset to cover several regions.

Why Tax Settings are important

Setting up taxes correctly helps you charge the right amount on every order and stay compliant with the tax rules of the regions you sell to.

By using Tax Settings, you can:

  • Enable or disable tax calculation for your whole store

  • Create tax zones and rates for the United States, European Union, and United Kingdom in a few clicks

  • Cover several regions by applying more than one preset

  • Avoid duplicate zones, as existing zones with the same name are skipped
