Signing in with Google or Microsoft

Use a Google or Microsoft account to sign in to your Orbit dashboard, and connect or disconnect those accounts on the Security Settings page.

You can sign in to your Orbit dashboard with a Google or Microsoft account instead of typing a password. You connect and disconnect those accounts on the Security Settings page, under Settings, then Security. This is the sign-in for your own dashboard, not the customer login on your storefront.

Considerations

  • Which providers you see depends on what Orbit has set up. If Google or Microsoft is not set up, its button does not appear on the sign-in page and its row is not on the card. If neither is set up, the card is hidden.
  • Orbit matches the two accounts by email address. If the email on your provider account already has an Orbit account, you enter your Orbit password once to connect them.
  • Two-factor authentication still applies. If it is on, you enter your code after the provider step. A browser you have already trusted is not asked again.
  • Each person on your team connects their own accounts. What you connect only changes your own sign-in.

Sign in with Google or Microsoft

  1. Go to the Orbit sign-in page.
  2. Click Continue with Google or Continue with Microsoft. The buttons sit above an or divider, with the email and password fields below it.
  3. Sign in at Google or Microsoft and allow access when you are asked.
  4. If two-factor authentication is on, enter your code.
  5. You land in your dashboard.

Confirm your password the first time

If that email already has an Orbit account, Orbit asks you to prove the account is yours before it connects anything. The screen is headed Confirm it's you and says the email already has an Orbit account, so you need to enter your password once to connect the provider to it.

  1. Type your Orbit password in Password.
  2. Click Connect and sign in.
  3. If two-factor authentication is on, enter your code.
  4. You are signed in, and the message Sign-in method connected appears.

You do this once. After that, the provider button signs you straight in. To use your password instead, click Sign in with your password.

Note: Nothing is connected until you finish this screen. If you close it, your accounts stay separate.

Connect an account from Security settings

  1. From your Orbit dashboard, go to Settings.
  2. Under Team & Access, click Security.
  3. Find the Connected accounts card. It reads Sign in to Orbit with these accounts instead of a password, and lists each provider with the connected email, or No accounts connected.
  4. Click Connect on the row you want.
  5. Sign in at Google or Microsoft and allow access.
  6. You come back to Orbit and the row now shows the email you signed in with.

Disconnect an account

  1. From your Orbit dashboard, go to Settings, then Security.
  2. On the Connected accounts card, click Disconnect on the row.
  3. The row goes back to No accounts connected. That button is now a Connect button again.

If that account is the only way you can sign in, Orbit refuses to remove it and shows a message on the card asking you to set a password first. That happens when you created your Orbit account with Google or Microsoft and have never set a password. Set a password on your account, then disconnect.

What connecting does not change

  • Your Orbit password still works. A connected account is another way in, not a replacement for the password.
  • Your second factor still applies. Two-factor codes and passkeys are asked for the same way, whichever button you start from.
  • Disconnecting removes the sign-in method and nothing else. Your Orbit account, your store and your Google or Microsoft account are untouched.

If sign-in does not finish

Orbit shows the reason on screen. The common ones are:

  • Your sign-in session expired. Please start again.: the confirm step took too long. Start again from the sign-in page.
  • This email is already used by an Orbit staff account. Sign in with your password instead.: that address belongs to an Orbit staff login, so it cannot be used this way.
  • Your Google account's email address is not verified, so we cannot use it to sign in.: verify the address with Google, then try again.
  • You are signed in, but we could not connect that account. Try again from your security settings.: you have a session, so use the Connect button on the Connected accounts card.

If you are locked out instead, see Fixing sign-in and two-factor problems.
