Products | Custom Types
Custom types are your own product groupings — for reporting, rules and internal organisation that never touch the storefront.
The Custom Type field (in Taxonomy, brand & tags) is a free-text grouping you invent yourself — “Colorful linens”, “Q4 samples”, “Consignment”. It asks nothing of the storefront: custom types exist for your organisation and rules.

When to use one
Reporting slices — compare how “Vintage” performs against “New” without building public categories.
Rule targeting — B2B catalogue pricing rules can target a custom type, so a whole internal group gets negotiated pricing at once.
Operational grouping — mark products by fulfilment reality (“bulky — two-person lift”) for the warehouse.
If the grouping should be shoppable, use a category instead; if it classifies the product for channels, use the taxonomy. Custom types are for everything in between.
Tips
Type the value identically everywhere — “Winter 2026” and “winter-2026” are two different custom types to a report.
